Reality and Recovery: Historic Preservation in the City of New York

Historic preservation is vital to the social, cultural, and economic health of New York City. For this reason, it will be key to recovery. Despite the claims made by a small group of critics who rail against historic preservation, residents and workers reveal their preference by choosing to live and work in historic neighborhoods. Consequently, business owners continue to see the value in locating in older or historic buildings and commercial corridors. The goal of this report is to identify and document the importance of New York’s historic resources as critical components in the recovery of the City. The findings of this study demonstrate that preservation is good for business, big and small.
